Ferry Cottage was the gatehouse and home to the Ferry Captain for the passenger, livestock and vehicle ferry that ran from the Isle of Oxney to the UK mainland at Appledore, which in the 17th Century was over a quarter of a mile wide. This period cottage is in the heart of the countryside, and enjoys spectacular views and late sunsets. It has a walled garden that backs onto the 'Reading Street Dyke', a small river that runs along the course of the Old Rother.
The Ferry Inn, which adjoins Ferry Cottage, was built in 1690 to refresh and accommodate people crossing the outlet of the Old River Rother, from the village of Stone to the English mainland at Appledore. The Saxon Shore Way, a 163 mile footpath along the old Roman coastline, runs directly past Ferry Cottage. This makes it a popular choice for walkers and cyclists. The picturesque village of Appledore is only 25 minutes walk or a 5 minute drive away. The Ancient Cinque port of Rye is 6 miles away and Tenterden 7 miles.
On the ground floor of this centrally heated cottage, there is a lounge with wood-burning stove, dining room and a well-equipped kitchen. There is also a downstairs toilet. Upstairs, there is one double bedroom, two twin bedrooms and bathroom with bath/shower. There is a pleasant, walled garden to the rear that has a picnic table and barbecue. Parking is across the lane in the Ferry Inn car park.
If you are looking for a comfortable and convenient base from which to tour Kent and Sussex by foot, bicycle or car, Ferry Cottage is hard to beat.
